Breast and cervical cancer touch the lives of many Mainers every year, with breast cancer being the leading cause of cancer in Maine women. Both breast and cervical cancer cases are higher in Maine per 100,000 than nationally. Screening can detect breast and cervical cancers early, when treatment is most effective, making early detection through regular screening essential. 

  • Breast & Cervical Screening Recommendations

    The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends that women who are 40 to 74 years old and are at average risk for breast cancer get a mammogram every 2 years. Women should weigh the benefits and risks of screening tests (see below). Different screening recommendations may be used for women at a higher-than-average risk

  • The Maine CDC Breast and Cervical Health Program (MBCHP) helps cover the costs of breast and cervical screening and diagnostic services for women 21 and older who meet income guidelines.
