The OHP seeks to improve the oral health of Maine people through:
- Public leadership in assisting community initiatives to prevent, control and reduce oral diseases.
- Planning, implementing and evaluating programs for oral health promotion and disease prevention.
- Statewide coordination and integration of community based oral health services through increased access and removal of barriers.
Oral health includes the health of the teeth, gums, tongue, and the full oral-facial system. Poor oral health can contribute to a range of other health conditions and often aligns with risk factors for many chronic diseases. Supporting good oral hygiene is an important part of overall wellness.
Effective strategies include brushing twice a day for two minutes, flossing each day, and seeing a dental provider on a regular basis. These actions help preserve oral health throughout the lifespan.
